Blood Pressure:
What is Blood Pressure?
Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of your body in vessels
called arteries. Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing
against the walls of the arteries. Each time the heart beats (about
60-70 times a minute at rest), it pumps out blood into the arteries.
Your blood pressure is at its highest when the heart beats, pumping the
blood. This is called systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest,
between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic
pressure.
What is high blood pressure?
A blood pressure of 140/90 or higher is considered high blood pressure.
Both numbers are important. If one or both numbers are usually high, you
have high blood pressure. If you are being treated for high blood
pressure, you still have high blood pressure even if you have repeated
readings in the normal range.
There are two levels of high blood pressure: Stage 1 and Stage 2

Stroke:
A stroke occurs when the
flow of blood to a part of the brain is cut off. This can be due to
something (usually a blood clot) blocking the flow of blood to the brain
(ischemic stroke). It can also be caused by a burst blood vessel
bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). About 80% of strokes are
ischemic and 20% are hemorrhagic. Without a blood supply, the brain cells in the affected area start to die.
The
warning signs of stroke include:
sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling of the face, arm, or leg (often
on only one side of the body)
sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or trouble understanding speech
sudden vision loss (often in one eye only) or double vision
sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or
falls
sudden severe headache (often described as "the worst headache of my
life") with no known cause
Varicose veins: Veins on
the leg which are large, twisted, and ropelike, and can cause pain,
swelling, or itching. They are an extreme form of telangiectasia, or
spider veins.
Psychological
Stress: People can experience
either external or internal stressors.
External stressors include adverse physical conditions (such as pain or
hot or cold temperatures) or stressful psychological environments (such
as poor working conditions or abusive relationships). Humans, like
animals, can experience external stressors.
Internal stressors can also be physical (infections, inflammation) or
psychological. An example of an internal psychological stressor is
intense worry about a harmful event that may or may not occur. As far as
anyone can tell, internal psychological stressors are rare or absent in
most animals except humans.
Osteoarthritis:
the most common form of arthritis.
It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is the tough
elastic material that covers and protects the ends of bones. Bits of
cartilage may break off and cause pain and swelling in the joint between
bones. This pain and swelling is called inflammation.
Over time the cartilage may wear away entirely, and the bones will rub
together.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint but usually affects hips, knees,
hands and spine.
High
Cholesterol: Cholesterol
is a soft, waxy substance found in your bloodstream. Although your body
needs cholesterol to help build and maintain cells, too much cholesterol
can build up on your artery walls.
Diabetes:
Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or unable
to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar). Glucose backs up in
the bloodstream — causing one’s blood glucose or "sugar" to rise too
