High Blood Pressure: What is Blood Pressure?
Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of your body in vessels called arteries. Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. Each time the heart beats (about 60-70 times a minute at rest), it pumps out blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is at its highest when the heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure.

What is high blood pressure?
A blood pressure of 140/90 or higher is considered high blood pressure. Both numbers are important. If one or both numbers are usually high, you have high blood pressure. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, you still have high blood pressure even if you have repeated readings in the normal range.
There are two levels of high blood pressure: Stage 1 and Stage 2

Stroke: A stroke occurs when the flow of blood to a part of the brain is cut off. This can be due to something (usually a blood clot) blocking the flow of blood to the brain (ischemic stroke). It can also be caused by a burst blood vessel bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). About 80% of strokes are ischemic and 20% are hemorrhagic. Without a blood supply, the brain cells in the affected area start to die.
The warning signs of stroke include:

  • sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling of the face, arm, or leg (often on only one side of the body)

  • sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or trouble understanding speech

  • sudden vision loss (often in one eye only) or double vision

  • sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or falls

  • sudden severe headache (often described as "the worst headache of my life") with no known cause

    Varicose veins: Veins on the leg which are large, twisted, and ropelike, and can cause pain, swelling, or itching. They are an extreme form of telangiectasia, or spider veins.

    Psychological Stress: People can experience either external or internal stressors.
    External stressors include adverse physical conditions (such as pain or hot or cold temperatures) or stressful psychological environments (such as poor working conditions or abusive relationships). Humans, like animals, can experience external stressors.
    Internal stressors can also be physical (infections, inflammation) or psychological. An example of an internal psychological stressor is intense worry about a harmful event that may or may not occur. As far as anyone can tell, internal psychological stressors are rare or absent in most animals except humans.

    Osteoarthritis: the most common form of arthritis.
    It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is the tough elastic material that covers and protects the ends of bones. Bits of cartilage may break off and cause pain and swelling in the joint between bones. This pain and swelling is called inflammation.
    Over time the cartilage may wear away entirely, and the bones will rub together.
    Osteoarthritis can affect any joint but usually affects hips, knees, hands and spine.

    High Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in your bloodstream. Although your body needs cholesterol to help build and maintain cells, too much cholesterol can build up on your artery walls.

    Diabetes: Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or unable to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar). Glucose backs up in the bloodstream — causing one’s blood glucose or "sugar" to rise too high.
    People with diabetes frequently experience certain symptoms. These include:
    being very thirsty
    frequent urination
    weight loss
    increased hunger
    blurry vision
    irritability
    tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
    frequent skin, bladder or gum infections

    More than half of American adults are overweight. This is a trend that is leading to various mental and physical disorders in the USA.

    Diet
    A balanced low fat diet is high in healthy carbohydrates, low in fat and moderate in protein.
    It should be rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which are specially recommended for weight control and preventing diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

    Food Portions Explanation
    Vegetables Minimum of 5 portions a day combined with fruit. Vegetables are a good source of Vit A, Vit C, Calcium and Iron. Dark greens such as spinach, cabbage and broccoli. Fresh not tinned is preverbal, not too much of the starchy potatoes.
    Fruit Minimum of 5 portions a day combined with vegetables. Lots of vitamins and fibre and no fats.  Their flavonoids strengthen blood vessels and are strong antioxidants.
    Whole-grains & whole (brown) rice Reasonable amounts - if tolerated. Alot of basic food contain many good components like fibre, minerals and vitamins but are removed in refining.  Bran & germ are very high in B vitamins, minerals & betaine.
    Beans, soy and lentils Reasonable amounts - if tolerated. Lower bad cholesterol & triglycerides.  High fibre, low fat.  Combine with nuts & grains.  Their protein may be good for the heart.  Soy is good for health, heart & anti-cancer.
    Fibre Approx 30 g/day Cereal bran & germ are amazing sources of betaine & choline. Found in whole grains (oat), fruits, beans, veggies. Often missing in processed foods
    Oils 2 teaspoons of flax or fish oil, or 2 tblsp. canola or unhydrogenated soybean oil. Natural oils are found in fatty fish (like salmon, mackerel, & sardines), in flax(lin)seed, canola type rape seed, mustard seed, chia, candlenut, wheat germ, some melon seeds, hemp, walnuts and some green leaf veggies. Buy oils in dark containers and keep cool.
    Eggs & Liver Regularly High in protein, B vitamins, lecithin & choline.  High in cholesterol but low in fat.  Normally proportionally raise good cholesterol more than bad.  Avoid products with dried egg [it has oxidized cholesterol].
    Meats Not essential. As fresh as possible.  Aging, drying and over-frying damages or oxidizes fats and cholesterol.
    Alcohol 1-2 glasses of red wine/day. Low amounts reduce heart disease.  Red wine with its flavonoids protects blood cholesterol.  Best with foods containing B vitamins such as liver.
    Water Lots -within reason May cut bladder cancer by ½. Drink tepid not chilled or iced water.

    Exercise
    Take regular moderate exercise
    20 minutes of light exercise every day is fine for starters.
    You can increase this gradually but don't overdo it.
    Exercise won't make you slim but it helps.
