Risk factors for fibromyalgia
include the following:
Age (more common in young adults)
Gender (more common in women than men)
Genetic (familial patterns suggest the disorder may be inherited)
Sleep disorders (whether sleep difficulties are a cause or a result of
fibromyalgia is unknown)
True or False
False: Fibromyalgia is a new disease, a
"fad" disease of the '90's.
True: Symptoms similar to Fibromyalgia were
described in the 1700's. It was called fibrositis in 1904 and renamed
Fibromyalgia in the 1980's.
False: Fibromyalgia is a "wastebasket"
diagnosis.
True: Some physicians view FMS as the
diagnosis when no other cause for the patient's symptoms can be found.
That approach is no longer valid.
False: Fibromyalgia is caused by
deconditoning - muscles becoming weak & limp as a result of inactivity.
True: This misconception has added to the
painful burden of those suffering from FMS. This blaming of the victim
is singularly unhelpful to the patient's state of mind & is also
medically inaccurate
False: People with Fibromyalgia tend to
overreact to their symptoms or exaggerate their pain.
True: The pain of FMS has been rated to be
as severe as the pain of rheumatoid arthritis by patients who have one
or the other condition.
False: You look ok, you must be ok
True: The fact that you may look ok is
distressingly inconsistent with how terrible you feel. If visible signs
such as a red rash corresponding with the pain were visible, others
would see it and empathize.
False: You may have somehow brought your
symptoms upon yourself.
True: There isn't anything you did or
failed to do that caused you to develop FMS.
False: Fibromyalgia is a condition that is
in the psychiatric spectrum.
True: The pain & symptoms of FMS have a
definite physical origin. Unfortunately, medical science has not yet
arrived at a full understanding of the underlying abnormalities. |
According to the American
College of Rheumatology, Fibromyalgia affects 2% of the
population. While it is not fully understood, some
symptoms include aching, fatigue, lack of sleep, morning
stiffness, headaches, and depression.
Causes of fibromyalgia:
Causes of fibromyalgia are not known. The condition produces
vague symptoms that could be associated with lesser blood flow
to certain parts of the brain and higher amounts of substance P,
which is thought to be a sensory neurotransmitter involved in
the communication of pain, touch, and temperature from the body
to the brain. Researchers have identified several other possible
causes, including the following:
Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
Viral or bacterial infection
Chronic sleep disorders
Immune or endocrine system dysfunction
Upper spinal cord injury
Emotional stress or trauma
Exercise: One of the best things you can do if you have fibromyalgia is
exercise. Stretching exercises and gentle, low-impact activity
like walking or cycling. Be gentle with your exercise program at
the beginning, exercise may make your pain worse. Some muscle
soreness is normal when you start exercising, but sharp pain
could mean you have overworked your muscles.
For exercise to help, you must do it on a regular basis. As you progress with the exercise, it will become more
comfortable for you.
Walking: Start very slowly, walk for 5 minutes the first day,
then add a minute to this total. Keep adding 1 or 2 minutes a
day until you are walking 60 minutes a day. Once you reach this
point, walk for one hour at least three to four times a week. If
at any point you are struggling, go back to a length of time
that was comfortable for you, and walk for this time period for
several days. Once you are doing this comfortably, continue to
increase the minutes again until you reach the goal of 60
minutes.
Walking/jogging: After you feel comfortable walking three or
four times a week, you can alternate walking with slow jogging.
Walk for a couple of blocks, then jog one block and repeat.
Bicycling: Exercise bikes offer the benefit of exercising
indoors. Check your mileage, and set a progressive goal until
you reach 60 minutes.
Which ever exercise you choose will be of benefit to you, take
it slowly at first and build yourself up. Exercise relieves much
of the pain fibromyalgia causes. Some people even find that
exercise makes all their pain go away.

Success Story
| I am amazed at my success
with your product Anatrin. I
was very skeptical before I
purchased, but after using
it for three or four weeks I
feel a lot better. In fact,
I was using a wheelchair
when I had to go to the mall
or when I would be walking
far and I have been able to
tough it out lately. No more
wheelchair and a definite
decline in my muscle pain.
Once again, I am amazed and
I wanted to say this is a
GREAT product."
