Most acne begins at puberty. This is when the body starts to produce
androgen hormones. Androgens cause the over stimulation and enlargement
of the sebaceous glands. Sensitivity to these androgens also cause acne
to appear during the menstrual cycle and occasionally in pregnancy. The
extra sebum or oil that the sebaceous glands produce mixes with dead
skin cells and bacteria on the skin's surface which blocks the pores.
Inside the blocked pore, bacteria multiply and cause inflammation
leading to the spots and pustules associated with acne.
Stress can also cause the production of hormones like cortisol, which can aggravate acne.
Diet - many people think
that eating chocolate cause pimples.
Research has not been able to prove
any such link, but some people find
that it works this way for them. It
is possible that a person eats
chocolate when they are under a lot
of stress, and that it is actually
the stress that causes the pimples.
However, healthy eating may help. |

Not everyone who is overly
hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive has an attention
disorder. Since most people sometimes blurt out things
they didn't mean to say, bounce from one task to
another, or become disorganized and forgetful, how can
specialists tell if the problem is ADHD?
To assess whether a person has ADHD, specialists
consider several critical questions: Are these behaviors
excessive, long-term, and pervasive? That is, do they
occur more often than in other people the same age? Are
they a continuous problem, not just a response to a
temporary situation? Do the behaviors occur in several
settings or only in one specific place like the
playground or the office? The person's pattern of
behavior is compared against a set of criteria and
characteristics of the disorder. These criteria appear
in a diagnostic reference book called the DSM (short for
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders). |

Male:
One of the most essential steps in the ability to
conceive occurs in the prostate gland. This gland is in
the news a lot as researchers are discovering just how
it functions and affects some important systems in our
body. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra almost
like your hand would grip a small cup.
One of the prostate’s functions is to provide for the
delivery of sperm. It produces seminal fluid, or semen.
Female: Did you
know that around 70% of all attempts to become pregnant
using fertility drug therapy or treatments will not
result in pregnancy? That means about 3 out of every 4
attempts will end in heart break, not to mention break
the bank.
And of the remaining 30% that do result in pregnancy,
only 14%, LESS THAN HALF, will have the desired outcome.
That means of the slim to few that actually do get
pregnant, more than half of those pregnancies result in
multiple births, birth defects, or unknown outcomes. Not
too good. |

According to the American
College of Rheumatology, Fibromyalgia affects 2% of the
population. While it is not fully understood, some
symptoms include aching, fatigue, lack of sleep, morning
stiffness, headaches, and depression.
Causes of fibromyalgia are not known. The condition produces
vague symptoms that could be associated with lesser
blood flow to certain parts of the brain and higher
amounts of substance P, which is thought to be a sensory
neurotransmitter involved in the communication of pain,
touch, and temperature from the body to the brain.
Researchers have identified several other possible
causes, including the following:
Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
Viral or bacterial infection
Chronic sleep disorders
Immune or endocrine system dysfunction
Upper spinal cord injury
Emotional stress or trauma

Research from Medline Plus
Health Information indicates that 90% of the population has been
exposed to HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus) while 25% of the
population between the ages of 25-45 have been exposed to HSV-2
(genital herpes). Both cause a lifelong infection.
Herpes infections
most commonly occur in the mouth, but can also occur in the
genital areas and around the eyes. Some common symptoms are
swelling, redness, clusters of blisters, fever, headache,
fatigue, pain, and blurred vision. These symptoms are often the
worst during the first infection.
There are two types of the virus.
Type 1 herpes (HSV-1) - Cold sores Type 2 herpes (HSV-2) - often associated
with genital herpes

If
you’ve ever experienced kidney stones, or you are experiencing
them for the first time, you know how excruciating they can be.
Perhaps you’re not sure if you’ve had them before but recall
experiencing some mild or even serious discomfort during
urination, a dull ache or sharp pain in your lower back, side or
groin area. Maybe you’ve gone to the bathroom and were shocked,
even scared to see blood in your urine, especially when you’re
in so much pain. What’s wrong? These are all common symptoms and
signs of kidney stones, also known as renal stone disease.
The US National Institute of Health estimates that 1 in 10
people develop kidney stones at some point in their life.
Researchers at the USNIH have found that those who live near
large bodies of water (the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico,
etc.) are more likely to develop kidney stones, as well as those
who live in “soft” water areas (where water contains low levels
of calcium, magnesium and other minerals). Also, people who come
from a family with a history of renal stone disease are more
likely to develop stones because certain genetic conditions that
promote stone development can be inherited from parents. |

Nail fungus is an unsightly and potentially painful problem.
Most people don' t realize that nail infections are extremely
common and not at all a symptom of dirtiness or poor hygiene. In
fact, most people contract a nail fungus from swimming pools,
showers, locker rooms, salons, or simply by wearing closed-in
footwear. The fungus can invade your skin through the smallest
cut or through the tiny separation between your nail and nail
bed. Most products on the market today only treat the symptoms,
but when you are only treating the symptoms you're simply making
the condition liveable. If you really want to rid yourself of
nail fungus, you have to get to the source of the problem; you
have to kill the nail fungus so it will not return.
When nail
fungus begins to spread and goes deeper into the nail
you will notice that your nails are:
Thick
Brittle
Discolored
Nails will lose their lustre and shine
Nails will begin to crumble
Nails will become ragged
Nails will form distorted shapes
Your nail can eventually fall off |

Osteoarthritis occurs
when the surface layer of cartilage-the protective
tissue between bones at joints-breaks down and wears
away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub
together, causing pain, swelling and loss of motion of
the joint. This pain and swelling is called
inflammation. Over time the cartilage may wear away
entirely, and the bones will rub together.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint but usually affects
hips, knees, hands and spine.
What are the warning signs of osteoarthritis?
Pain, stiffness and swelling around a joint that lasts
longer than two weeks.
The joints that are usually affected are the hips,
knees, feet and spine. Finger and thumb joints might
also be affected.
Osteoarthritis affects
12.1 percent of U.S. adults.
Most people develop osteoarthritis after the age of 45,
but it can occur at any age. |

You’re a smoker who is
thinking about quitting, but that is easier said than
done. Cigarettes are a part of your life; you identify
yourself with being a smoker. From smoke breaks to after
dinner cigarettes and every one in between, you enjoy
having a cigarette. You know every downfall to smoking,
you know all the risks and have heard all the nagging,
but people who aren’t smokers just don’t understand how
difficult it can be to quit, how scary the thought of
never having another cigarette can be.

Have you ever picked a day and said, “This is the day
I’m going to quit.” then became increasingly nervous as
that day approached? Have you ever tried to stop cold
turkey only to have every thought consumed with just one
more drag? Have you ever lied and told everyone you had
quit to appease friends and family only to sneak around
to get your fix? Well, you are not alone. |

If
you are suffering from shingles right now you probably feel ill,
weak, depressed, and self-conscious. You're not alone - shingles
is a very common virus that effects close to 1 million Americans
every year. Living with the pain and embarrassment of shingles
can be very difficult. Right now the shingles virus is attacking
your nervous system and causing excruciating pain, not to
mention the sore, tingling blisters that are making it hard to
work, sleep, sit, or even function due to the pain. Now there is
a way to stop shingles in its tracks. You no longer have to
suffer through the pain or be self-conscious about your
blisters.
Although Herpes Zoster is not typically life-threatening, it is
not an easy condition to deal with. Shingles affects the nerve
endings in the skin and starts as an itchy rash that causes
tingling or numbness on your skin then elevates to blisters.
Shingles typically occurs on the skin of the stomach under the
ribs leading toward the navel, and usually stays on one side of
your body, but shingles can appear anywhere on the body.
Shingles usually only lasts around 1 - 2 months, but the pain
can remain for years after the shingles blisters have dried up
and fallen off. You do not have to continue to suffer. You can
do what 87,000 other shingles sufferers have done - take care of
your shingles and the pain they cause, and get back to your
normal life. |

Genetic, environmental, psychological, and other factors
all play a part in obesity.
Genetic factors
Obesity tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic
link, but families also share diet and lifestyle habits
that could contribute to obesity.
Environmental factors
This includes lifestyle behavior such as what a person
eats and their level of physical activity.
Psychological factors
Many people eat in response to negative emotions such as
sadness, boredom or anger. Even when on diets, some
people will binge eat.
Other causes of obesity
Some illnesses can lead to obesity or weight gain. These
include hypothyroidism, depression, Cushing's syndrome
and certain neurological problems. Some drugs such as
steroids and some antidepressants may also cause weight
gain.
Diet
A balanced low fat diet is high in healthy
carbohydrates, low in fat and moderate in protein. |
